Front Terminal Batteries – What are they?
Front terminal batteries are sealed lead acid batteries with a design specifically ideal for 19 inch or 23 inch power cabinets. Standard AGM batteries have their terminals on top, but front terminal batteries have the terminals in the front (hence the name). The benefit of having the terminals in the front is that it makes installing and supervising the batteries easy. Although front terminal batteries are narrow, they are manufactured with strong ABS containers, which defend the terminals against short circuits and against plate corrosion. Some installers require front terminal batteries to be manufactured with flame-retardant containers, which adds an extra layer of protection against fire in environments where flames may be present. Front terminal batteries are constructed with thick plates and a special paste formula, which allow for a long service life. Similar to all sealed lead acid batteries, front terminal batteries are designed with vent valves, which work to reduce water loss, regulate internal gasses and prevent air/sparks from going inside.
Front Terminal Battery Characteristics
Assume you have a backup power system containing a hundred batteries. If a battery fails and requires replacement, front terminal batteries are very easy to replace since they are narrow and have terminals in the front. The clips are easily detached from the terminals, then the battery can be sliden out and easily replaced with a new battery.
Front Terminal Battery Applications
In terms of battery applications, front terminal batteries were originally designed to fit in telecom cabinets. However, due to their convenient design, many installers have adopted them for other standby and backup power applications, such as UPS and emergency lighting. Other applications include network equipment, switch gear, navigation aids and local area networks.
